Glossary of Web Hosting Terms
- Domain Name - This is the name that appears in your URL, e.g. www.mydomainname.com
- Disk Space - This is the amount of data that you are allowed to store on the web server. Sites with many large files, such as images and video files, will require a larger amount of disk space.
- Bandwidth - Also referred to as data transfer, this is the amount of data your site provides to visitors over a given length of time. Sites with higher traffic volume will require a higher bandwidth limit.
- .htaccess Override - Provides a way to make configuration changes on individual directories in your site. Many scripts will not work correctly without this ability.
- PHP - A popular scripting language that can be used to build dynamic, interactive web sites.
- MySQL - A popular database management system (DBMS) that is commonly used for web development. It allows you to store a collection of records that can be displayed or modified using a scripting language such as PHP.
